A Winning Poem

May 12, 2009

I told my six year old girl about our local library’s children’s poetry contest last month and she decided to enter it.  The theme was something along the lines of how the library connects the world and she carefully thought and then crafted her poem.  We entered it with plenty of time to spare.  Then weeks passed and the contest was a mere memory.  Yesterday we got a call from a librarian to let us know that she had won 1st place in the 1st and 2nd grade categories and a gift certificate to our local independent book store.  On Sunday she will go to the ceremony and read her poem and receive her prize.  She is so excited about it and she’s rehearsing so that she doesn’t stumble when she’s nervous up there.

READ

Reading for fun
It makes you laugh
It makes you smile
It takes you to different places

Reading to learn
It teaches you how to plant
It teaches you to explore
It reaches far into wonders

Reading to others
They learn to listen
They learn to dream
They turn into a book traveler
