Gaining Space by Letting Go

April 25, 2009

We are guilty of attaching too much sentimentality to objects in this home and not letting go of things because we might need them in the future.  This latter attribute has come in handy quite a few times, but sometimes you have to learn to let go.  We’ve had a fifth wheel RV for the whole of our marriage.  We lived in it several times when we were young and crazier and unencumbered.  For the past ten years it has been taking up space in our yard-space that could grow things like grapes or laying hens or even meat rabbits.  We made a half-hearted attempt to sell it years ago, but that wasn’t successful.  So, it has sat unused and aging in our yard.  We finally decided to really get rid of it this spring.  We attempted to donate it to a charity.  They didn’t have the room to house it at this time, so they declined.  Facing the possibility of not being able to give it away, we decided to try bartering on Craigslist.  And guess what!  It worked.  Yesterday our once loved fifth wheel was towed away by a young couple and tree climbing and cutting equipment were left in its place with some near future yard help thrown in as well.

I’m a Craigslist barter fan now.  I was so pessimistic about the chances of bartering when we placed the ad, but it worked out great for us.

Me too. I was very surprised to have it turn out well.
