Buried Treasure

January 24, 2009

Look at these fingerlings I dug out of my garden yesterday! There were only enough for one dish of roasted potatoes. Too bad I didn’t get them planted earlier. I planted them in late summer/early fall, so I was so excited to get anything, but still…I would have liked more. They were so fresh and delicious. Pulling potatoes up in January. Who would’ve thought?

I’m jealous. Is it spring yet?

I read many blogs about gardening and urban gardening and I find time and time again that people do something (like plant at the wrong time) wrong and end up with such a treat. In Colorado we had a cold frame that we would knock two feet of snow off to get some fresh lettuce. In AZ of course that does not work but I am still getting fresh cayenne peppers in January, almost February and it is only getting warmer now. Who’d have thunk?

I bet they were the tastiest ever. Anything you water and pick and then cook usually is.

ps. Bennett still asks questions about bees in the backyard. šŸ™‚ I told him we will ask Maddy someday about that. Better to learn from a peer certain things I think.
