Airport Park

January 12, 2008

Yesterday we spent some family time at a local park named Airport Park, because it is right next to the airport. It is a few miles from our house, but we haven’t ever been there the eight and a half years we have lived here.

It had all these concrete benches covered with a thick coat of moss and lichen.

The most amazing thing was all these unique water fountains. Many of them were covered in shells, but they had different styles of bowls and a lot of care and planning put into their construction. I would say it is a shame that they no longer work, but it might not be a shame because they look so old and attractive covered with moss.

We found lots of mushrooms and fungi. We took pictures to try to identify them in our mushroom field guide. If we had known about the variety we would find, we would have brought it with us.

This was a particularly fun one. I think it looks like somebody squirted Cheez Whiz on the tree. There were dozens of little fungi like this on on the trunk.

These were kind of cool, too.

We will probably go back with our mushroom guide. It had two trails and we took the .5 mile one. It was an easy walk, that would be even easier when it isn’t so muddy and wet in some spots. We were even graced with sunshine streaming through the trees and we found the letterbox hidden in the park.

See, this is why I LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE, even though I’ve never been there. It’s just so…right to me. I see those squishy fungi and that bench and I just get really happy.

I can’t wait to see it all in May.

April-It is a lovely place. Let me know if you need specific directions, because I couldn’t find them online. Luckily it is easy to find.
