Sorry I have been missing in action lately. We have been battling the plague over here. At first I thought we had the flu, but I’m not so sure that’s what it was. I don’t know exactly what it was, but it was nasty. I had irregular bodily emissions for six days. I lost five pounds from my illness. Lawrence got a slightly lesser case and Maddy did as well. Juliana got a touch of it and Isabel had a stomach-ache off and on for a day or so, but she escaped better than anyone.

On Saturday, Maddy had her annual tae kwon do friendship tournament. In spite of still feeling less than her best, she summoned the strength to attend. This is kind of a big event, because it is once a year and we have to drive 1 1/2 to get to it and it lasts all day (really, I’m not kidding, we got there at 11:30 and left at 8:00). It is a chance for the individual teaching schools to show off their stuff. Maddy was chosen by her instructors as one of four students to represent the team in team competition, so missing this would have been a real letdown for her team, too. I could tell that she was really getting tired about half-way through. Despite her exhaustion, she still placed second in sparring for her belt and weight division. She didn’t medal in her forms, which she did last year, so I think she was kind of disappointed, but since she just promoted to her new belt at the beginning of the month, she only learned her new form about a week and a half ago, so she really was a novice with it. It would have been a stretch to expect to medal after a week and a half of practicing! The most important thing was that Maddy stuck with it and hung in there and did her best in spite of not feeling her best. Unfortunately, Lawrence wasn’t able to come with us because he was trying to catch up with work after having been knocked out for a couple of days, himself. This makes it very difficult to try to watch Maddy, because there are really long waits between events for each particular participant since there are so many people. Isabel and Juliana get very bored and hungry and need to go to the bathroom, etc. Trying to keep up with that for almost nine hours with no assistance and still try to make it back into the gym in time to watch Maddy is very exhausting. Hopefully Lawrence will be able to attend next year to take up some of the work.

The funniest thing that happened was that during the awards ceremony, at the very end, the girls rebelled. They were done, they weren’t going to stay in there any longer, so we kind of hung out in the hallway where I could still peek in on Maddy to try to get a picture of her receiving her medal. Isabel saw a young mom with a couple month old baby and befriended her and her baby. The only problem was that this mom didn’t speak any English, so Isabel chattered on and on and this lady really couldn’t understand anything she was saying, but she thought it was so cute that she would laugh every once in a while. Then Isabel decides to try to overcome the language barrier by attempting to speak her own version of Spanish. It started out with tostada and continued on with her own Spanish words. Funny thing is that it did sound like it could have been Spanish; she rolled her r’s and everything. The mom couldn’t stop laughing, she thought it was hilarious, which was good because somebody else might have found it offensive. After we left, I told Isabel, “You know, that lady couldn’t understand what you were saying, right?” She assured me that she knew that, she just wanted to talk to her anyway. And you guys know how Isabel can talk and talk.

The good thing about Lawrence not coming is that it was because of work that he couldn’t come. We have gotten so busy in the past couple of weeks. He is scheduling new projects at the beginning of April now. He has even had to turn away a couple of small jobs, which is crazy because you hate to turn away work when you have just come out of a very lean spell, but one man can only do so much and we need to take the more lucrative jobs and we aren’t in a position to hire any employees. Maybe someday, but not now.
