Black Box Voting

November 6, 2004

I am pasting the entirety of an email I received a few minutes ago, because it gets to the heart of something that has troubled me for a while now. Electronic voting without voter verification and Diebold’s strong ties to the Republican party. We can be angry and depressed about the election, or we can try to effect change before the Electoral College meets on 12/13 and also afterwards. If the accusations have any merit, it is pure evil–more evil than I really gave the Bush administration credit for. Here is the email:

Bev Harris up in Washington State has organized an effort called (see the website at NOT blackboxvotingdotcom, which is a trap of a site designed to take in folks who don’t know to look for the .org). The best way to describe what’s happening right now is in her own words: Black Box Voting (.ORG) is conducting the largest Freedom of Information action in history. At 8:30 p.m. Election Night, Black Box Voting blanketed the U.S. with the first in a series of public records requests, to obtain internal computer logs and other documents from 3,000 individual counties and townships. Networks called the election before anyone bothered to perform even the most rudimentary audit. America: We have permission to say No to unaudited voting. It is our right.

(then a later update:)THURSDAY Nov. 4 2004: If you are concerned about what happened Tuesday, Nov. 2, you have found a home with our organization. Help America Audit.Black Box Voting has taken the position that fraud took place in the 2004 election through electronic voting machines. We base this on hard evidence, documents obtained in public records requests, inside information, and other data indicative of manipulation of electronic voting systems. What we do not know is the specific scope of the fraud. We are working now to compile the proof, based not on soft evidence — red flags, exit polls — but core documents obtained by Black Box Voting in the most massive Freedom of Information action in history. We need: Lawyers to enforce public records laws. Some counties have already notified us that they plan to stonewall by delaying delivery of the records. We need citizen volunteers for a number of specific actions. We need computer security professionals willing to GO PUBLIC with formal opinions on the evidence we provide, whether or not it involves DMCA complications. We need funds to pay for copies of the evidence. —————-

Randi Rhodes of KPOJ Air America (620 am–progressive talk radio) has been instrumental in this effort. Please see her website, including this chart that documents the discrepancies between the exit polls and the reported vote in contested vs. noncontested states: .

The Congress is acting on this already: see this formal request to the GAO for an immediate “investigation of the efficacy of voting machines and new technologies used in the 2004 election, how election officials responded to difficulties they encountered and what we can do in the future to improve our election systems and administration” by ranking members of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution: .

Greg Palast has also been on this (see _The Best Democracy Money Can Buy_ for an analysis of what happened in 2000, and for more immediate analysis of what happened this time around) . What we all can do: Go to ASAP and contribute anything, from $1 on up, to help in the fees for this effort. It’s tax-deductible 🙂 And feel free to spread this around to other folks who might be interested. We have the potential to make a serious difference, to bring the truth and these systematic felonies to light (everyone remembers how the CEO of Diebold promised to deliver Ohio to the President, yes? Here’s an article on it from the time from a local paper, for anyone who missed it: ) *before* 12/13, when the Electoral College meets.
